What is remote onboarding?
Remote onboarding is the process of bringing new employees into the business virtually.
How long should remote onboarding take?
It usually takes about two weeks to complete a remote onboarding process, however it typically takes about 1-3 months for the employee to be completely up to speed and comfortable with the company culture, systems and processes.
How to onboard remote employees
- Prepare the team
Even though your new recruit will be working remotely, you still need to make sure they feel included and that they are a part of the team. It is important to create this dynamic before the employee starts, you can do this by:
- Letting your current team know about the new starter (start date, job role and responsibilities)
- Assign a mentor, to buddy up with them for the first couple of weeks
- Ensure relevant team members make themselves available to support and check in on the new member
- Make sure their tech equipment is ready
Make sure any tech equipment needed to carry out their role is ready for their first day. A good idea is sending their equipment out to their home address a couple of days before they are due to start with documentation explaining the steps needed to take to access the systems.
- Share documents digitally
Share detailed information regarding company policies and employee benefits digitally. The materials should include everything from compliance to insurance to tax liabilities to the company policies on leaves and diversity and inclusion. Also, it’s essential to have the employees sign all the documents that formally say they are an employee of the business – asking for these to be digitally signed is also helpful when you are required to onboard remote employees.
- Schedule regular meetings
Schedule regular one-to-one meetings and introduction calls with the rest of the team to stay in communication and offer your support if it is needed.
- Set expectations
Setting clear expectations around your new hire’s roles and responsibilities is essential when they begin working for your business. To do this, it is imperative that you share the employees contract, job description as well as any relevant company policies.
