Bit about you
Hi, I’m Tom, but I go by Tommy at work places because there’s normally always other Toms. I’ve always enjoyed making things and tinkering. I give it all a go because I’m fascinated with how things work. That could be anything: DIY, 3D printing, clothes, furniture, mechanics, as well as software.
Outside of problem solving and creating things, I enjoy sailing. The wind in Britain makes it a lot of fun but the sun can leave a little more to be desired.
What is your job title at Wise?
Software engineer.
What does that involve?
Creating and maintaining software. Primarily, I’m one half of the app development team. Occasionally, if there’s the need, I’ll do some backend work as well.
What do you enjoy most about working here, and what motivated you to excel in your role?
I truly believe that it’s the people that make a place and that’s what I enjoy most about working at Wise. There’s a lot of respect, honesty and laughs which empowers you to take accountability for your work and make something you’re proud of.
What’s the culture like at Wise?
As mentioned before, there’s a lot of respect and trust at Wise. From day one at Wise I felt like I was treated as an equal and an adult. I’ve worked in a few other places where I felt the attitude was more “the newbie has to prove themself” which I can understand but in reality it isolates people.
What’s your favourite memory since working at Wise?
Professionally speaking, as a developer, I go to work each day focused on doing the best I can for the users; but I’m simultaneously detached from them, as you can imagine. However, when I saw a picture of a driver holding a big Beamin PR cheque (highlighting all of the extra money he’d made from the app) made it more real. Everyone’s working to make ends meet, now more than ever; knowing that the work we’ve put into Wise/Beamin is having tangible effects makes it all the sweeter.
Socially, I don’t kiss and tell, but maybe buy me a drink and I’ll share a story or two.
