This month’s employee spotlight is on our Junior Software Developer, Joy Lin. We sat down with Joy to ask her how she’s found working at Wise.
Joy Lin – Junior Software Developer
What is your role at Wise?
I am a Junior Software Engineer at Wise. I am part of the backend team and we are currently working on building microservices with Go. My responsibilities include learning the codebase, writing and maintaining code for assigned tickets, working on minor bug fixes and assisting the team with various tasks required to build such amazing products.
What does your day-to-day work look like?
My typical day begins with a cup of Yorkshire Tea and a daily team stand-up meeting in the morning, in which we align and share the progress of the work that everyone is contributing to. We also use this time to discuss and resolve potential problems that we foresee for the day.
After that, I will work on the tickets assigned to me. Sometimes I pair up with my other team members to work on more complex tasks. As a junior in the team, I also spend a lot of time reading code, asking questions and completing online courses that can provide in-depth knowledge on a specific area.
What’s the culture like at Wise?
I love the culture we have here at Wise! I maintain a healthy work-life balance and have enjoyed socialising with my colleagues both inside and outside of work. We have enjoyed monthly company socials including go-karting, comedy nights and visiting restaurants. The team at Wise have great communication and I have been made to feel comfortable working alongside other teams, including the managers.
What’s special about working at Wise?
People are valued and our personal growth is as important as the company’s success. I have been welcomed into the team and feel as though this is a company where I am able to both expand my knowledge and grow professionally.
Have you grown professionally since working at Wise?
I joined Wise in January 2022 as a graduate from the School of Code. Starting a new career as a Software Engineer with limited coding experience has presented many challenges, but I have been supported by many great people along the way. I have learned a great deal over the past six months and I feel like I learn something new every single day. I am writing code in Go with various technologies such as GraphQL and gRPC, both of which I only started learning since joining Wise.
My favourite part of being a member of the Dev Team here is that I always feel comfortable and supported to go to different engineers for questions, regardless of how simple they are, even if they are not in my day-to-day team.
What’s your favourite memory since working at Wise?
One of my strongest memories since joining Wise was completing my first ticket independently. I remember it taking nearly a whole week but I felt a strong sense of achievement and this milestone allowed me to reflect on the progress I had made since starting with Wise. Since then, many tickets have come my way and I feel my confidence grows with each one. Another great memory was my first social with the team. It was my first-time go-karting and although I was nervous, everyone was friendly and made the whole evening so much fun!
